The membership will consist of individuals having high potential and representing a wide range of academic disciplines, professions and business who have already demonstrated outstanding ability.
Members of the Young Academy will normally range in age from late 20s to early 40s. The period of Membership will be 3 years in the first instance, with the possibility of extending for up to a further 3 years. The first cohort of Members will be about 50 in number, with the intention of building up to an anticipated maximum over a period of six years. Members will pay an annual subscription of £75. The membership will cover a wide range of specialities and geographical distribution. The aim is also to have a good gender balance with at least 40% being women. Members will mainly be based in Scotland or have a strong Scottish connection.
Membership will only be awarded to those who are willing to make a strong commitment to developing and sustaining the Academy. Applicants will also be expected to demonstrate their commitment to, and evidence of, interdisciplinary working and broadly-based initiatives.
The membership will be selected through an open competitive process based on individual applications. These must be submitted no later than 1 July 2011. Applications will be welcome from academia, business and the professions. Applicants will be required to submit the names of two referees. The referees should be people of standing who are familiar with the applicant’s areas of activity and achievements.
The applications will be considered by a Selection Committee chaired by the President of the RSE. The final choice will be made by the RSE Council in September.
There is no presumption that membership of the Young Academy is a stepping stone to Fellowship of the RSE. Nor that it should inhibit the election to Fellowship of younger candidates. Membership of the Young Academy will neither help nor hinder progress towards Fellowship. The respective appointment and election processes will remain separate.
