• All branches of Engineering are eligible for consideration, including computer and software engineering.
• For engineers of promise to study some aspect of their profession in any part of the world except the United Kingdom. The Awards Committee would particularly welcome applications for scholars seeking to study in Asia, Africa or South America.
• Acceptance of a Scholarship implies an intention to spend at least two years in the United Kingdom following the period of tenure.
• Acceptance of a scholarship implies that the successful scholar would be willing to undertake some modest ambassadorial role (e.g. school liaison work) on their return to the U.K. This will be at the request and discretion of the RSE.
• Open to applicants who have already graduated with an Honours or Higher Degree in Engineering from a Scottish Higher Education Institution or who are currently pursuing a postgraduate degree in engineering at a Scottish University.
• Applications will also be considered from candidates who have first degrees in related subjects and substantial postgraduate experience in a field of engineering.
• The Scholarships are not available to pursue activities overseas as part of a first degree, nor for activities associated with an MEng.
• The Scholar will be appointed for any period up to a maximum of one year, although visits of approximately 2 – 5 months are strongly preferred. Visits of less than two months will not normally be considered. But prospective candidates should contact the RSE to discuss their particular intentions, especially if they fall outside the terms described.
• The value of the Scholarships is £1,250 per month, pro-rata.
• Candidates who hold other awards are not excluded from applying.
• It is a requirement that any publications which arise from the award of a scholarship, and which are authored or co-authored by the scholar, should acknowledge the support of the RSE through a J.M. Lessell’s scholarship.
