Call for Proposals and Speaker Suggestions for RSE Events
Fellows have always been asked to advise the Meetings Committee on topics in their field of expertise that might be suitable for a Society event and at this time of the year we turn our minds to planning the Events Programme 2009-2010. The Meetings Committee would therefore like to encourage you to put forward your ideas.
The majority of events are chosen approximately two years in advance but highly topical events may be arranged at shorter notice.
The RSE obviously cannot duplicate the types of meetings organised by individual learned societies. It can and does, however, organise events including public lectures, discussion forums and conferences which cover topics that are interdisciplinary, topical and therefore more appealing to a wider audience.
Organising the Event
Following approval by the RSE Meetings Committee (which normally meets in December and June each year), the RSE Programme Convener, Professor David Ingram VMH OBE FRSE, and the RSE Events Manager, Róisín Calvert-Elliott, will decide if the event requires a small Organising Committee to be set up. Proposers will be expected to play a prominent role on the Organising Committee or suggest someone else suitable to do so.
Organising Committees are normally set up for conferences and consist of 6-8 members including a Chairman, who should be a Fellow of the Society. The Chairman will be responsible for convening the minimum number of essential meetings of the Organising Committee and will be responsible for reporting to the Programme Convener and/ or Events Manager progress with the arrangements for the event. Not all members of the Organising Committee need be Fellows of the Society but it is expected that the majority will be.
Financing the Event
Proposers are encouraged to suggest potential sources or avenues for funding. The RSE provides comprehensive conference facilities and full administrative back-up. However, the Society cannot provide direct cash subsidies and all events held within the Events Programme must be self-financing and include a contribution to staff and overhead costs. Specimen budgets can be obtained from the RSE Events Manager, Róisín Calvert-Elliott.
