Fellowship of the RSE

|
The multidisciplinary membership of the RSE, encompassing excellence in the Sciences, Arts, Humanities, the Professions, Industry and Commerce, makes it unique amongst learned Societies in the UK.
Candidates for Fellowship are nominated by existing Fellows of the Society. Each candidature then undergoes a rigorous four-stage annual selection process which culminates in a postal ballot to the Fellowship.
The Society currently has 1,503 Fellows (70 Honorary Fellows, 47 Corresponding Fellows, 1,386 Ordinary Fellows)
The annual list of New Fellows is released after the first Ordinary meeting in March.
There have been many distinguished Fellows of the Society. Adam Smith was a founder member in 1783 and since that time the Fellowship has included Walter Scott (a past President), Joseph Black, James Hutton, Charles Darwin, John Logie Baird, William Wordsworth, Niels Bohr, Francis Crick, and Charlotte Auerbach amongst many others of note.
Currently the Society’s Honorary Fellows include Sir James Black, Sir Paul Nurse, Lord (George) Robertson, Frederick Sanger, and James Watson.
