| International Programme / Bilateral and Open Exchange Programmes |
|
| Fellows of the Royal Society of Edinburgh may wish to consider applying for one of the RSE's Fellows Only Grants. Further information can be found here |
The Royal Society of Edinburgh is keen to facilitate, encourage and support research collaboration in all areas between Scottish and overseas research groups. The object of the International Exchange Programmes, funded by the Scottish Government, is to enable postdoctoral scholars and researchers to come to Scotland or to visit overseas from their Scottish academic base for a short period of time with a view to establishing ongoing collaboration. |
| Both the Bilateral and Open Programme are open to Fellows and non-Fellows of the RSE, and are particularly appropriate, although not exclusively, for early stage researchers to facilitate establishing international connections.
|
| The RSE exchange programme began in 2003, and is additional to and complements existing schemes operated at UK level by the Royal Society and the British Academy in London. Where the RSE is not in a position to assist with your funding request, please refer to the SISTER website, a portal managed by the British Council to search for other funding opportunities in the UK. |
| Bilateral Programme |
| The Bilateral Programme facilitates the collaboration between researchers from Scotland and those based in institutions with which the RSE has a formal Memorandum of Understanding. Exchange Programme grants are for short-term visits of one to four weeks duration, the key objectives being to enhance the research capabilities of individual researchers, develop international collaborative links, and enable participation in international research programmes. |
| For visits to Scotland, the RSE meets the cost of accommodation and subsistence in Scotland, and international travel is covered by the partner academy. For visits from Scotland, the RSE covers the international travel, and the partner academy provides for accommodation and subsistence. |
| Both visitors and hosts should have established contact before submitting an application, either by previous collaboration or by scientific correspondence. |
| Applications for visits from Scotland should be submitted to the RSE by the Scottish-based applicant. Applications for visits to Scotland should be submitted to the relevant sister academy by the overseas collaborator. Please click on the relevant Academy link below for more information and contact details. |
| Under the Bilateral Programme, the RSE has Memoranda of Understanding with: |
|
| Deadlines |
| The next Bilateral programme application deadline in 2010 is 1 November. Completed applications and all supporting documents must be received by this date. Results are available around two months after the deadline. Where these dates fall on a weekend, applications must be received by the next working day. Click here to download forms. |
| Informal Agreements |
| The RSE also has informal agreements with: |
| - |
the Cuban Academy of Sciences |
| - |
the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters |
| - |
the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters |
| - |
the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences |
|
Under these informal agreements there is no provision for a Bilateral Programme, but when available, applications to the Open Programme are welcome.
|
| Open Programme |
| The Open Programme was launched in 2003 to allow researchers to further collaborations with research groups in countries (non-UK) or institutes not covered by the bilateral programme. Applications are invited for researchers to travel to or from a Scottish research institution. The RSE meets the costs of international travel, accommodation and subsistence. As with the Bilateral Programme, both visitors and overseas hosts should have established contact before submitting an application, either by previous collaboration or by scientific correspondence. |
| Deadlines |
| Further dates for the Open programme in 2010 will be announced. |
