Cormack Postgraduate Prize - closing date Monday, 4th October 2010
The Robert Cormack Bequest Committee annually awards a Postgraduate Research Prize to recognise and reward the most outstanding postgraduate student contribution to astronomical research in Scotland. In Session 2008/09 the Prize was awarded to Hazel Bain, Department of Physics and Astronomy, University of Glasgow, for her paper entitled “Hard X-ray emission from a flare-related jet”.

I am now writing to seek nominations for the 2009/10 awards and would therefore be grateful if you could submit your nomination(s) to me by Monday, 4th October 2010.

The Prize “will be awarded for the best astronomical research paper, accepted for publication in the period from 1st July to 30 June in the year of the award, with the nominated student the prime author of the paper”.

Nominations should therefore comprise of a copy of the paper and a formal statement from his/her supervisor providing (in the case of multi-author papers) an indication of the student’s contribution and a brief statement of the relevance of the paper in its specialist context, but NOT a letter of praise for the paper.

Cormack Small Astronomy Research Grant - closing date Monday, 4th October 2010
The Robert Cormack Bequest Committee is able to make small Research Grants to individuals or groups for Public Understanding of Science activities. This scheme is intended to help set up new projects, or to add new elements to existing ones, rather than to fund ongoing activities.

Funded projects must benefit a wider audience (e.g. public visitors, whole school) rather than the recipients of the funds (e.g. Astronomical Society, School Class or Club). A total of £1000 is available this year and it is most likely that this will be divided among a number of awards. The outcome of applications will be announced in late November.

In 2009, awards included:

  • Shetland Astronomical Society
  • Sir E Scott Secondary School, Isle of Harris
  • Cosmic Sky

Closing date: Monday, 4th October 2010
